DFW Retaining Wall Cost Calculator Guide
To estimate a DFW retaining wall, multiply wall face area by a per-square-foot rate, then add drainage at roughly $15-$25 per linear foot and engineering where the wall exceeds 4 feet. Most walls work out to $150-$350 per linear foot all in. Clay soil and poor access push the figure up. Texas Stone Craft builds these walls in hand-carved concrete across DFW.

Calculating a realistic retaining wall cost in Dallas-Fort Worth means more than picking a per-foot number off a chart — soil type, wall height, drainage, permits, and access all shift the final price. This guide walks through the formulas, per-foot rates, and worked examples we use to estimate retaining wall cost for DFW homeowners, with specific notes on Eagle Ford Shale, Austin Chalk, and Tarrant County clay.

Quick Cost Estimation Formula
Basic Formula:
Total Cost = (Linear Feet × Height Factor × Material Rate) + Drainage + Engineering + Permits
Simplified Estimate:
Linear Feet × $150-$350/LF = Rough Budget Range
Step-by-Step Cost Calculator
Step 1: Measure Your Wall
What to Measure:
- Length: Total linear feet of wall needed
- Height: Average height from base to top
- Terrain: Slope percentage if applicable
Example Measurement:
- Wall length: 40 linear feet
- Average height: 4 feet
- Terrain: Moderate slope (10%)
Step 2: Determine Base Cost Per Linear Foot
Hand-Carved Concrete Base Rates (DFW 2026):
- 2-3 feet: $150-$200/LF
- 3-4 feet: $200-$280/LF
- 4-5 feet: $280-$350/LF
- 5-6 feet: $350-$450/LF
- 6+ feet: $450-$600+/LF
Why Height Matters:
- Taller walls require deeper footings
- More reinforcement needed
- Engineering becomes more complex
- Labor intensity increases
Step 3: Apply Site Condition Multipliers
Easy Access (Standard): 1.0x
- Direct equipment access
- Flat staging area
- No obstacles
Moderate Difficulty: 1.15-1.25x
- Limited access (tight gates)
- Some obstacles
- Moderate slope
Difficult Access: 1.30-1.50x
- Hand-carry materials required
- Working around pools/structures
- Steep terrain
- Mature trees to protect
Example Calculation:
- Base rate: $250/LF
- Moderate difficulty multiplier: 1.20x
- Adjusted rate: $300/LF
Step 4: Add Drainage Costs
Standard French Drain System:
- Base cost: $2,500-$4,000
- Per linear foot addition: $15-$25/LF
Enhanced Drainage (DFW clay soil recommended):
- Base cost: $4,000-$6,000
- Per linear foot addition: $25-$40/LF
Drainage Cost Formula:
Drainage Cost = Base Drainage + (Linear Feet × Per-Foot Rate)
Example:
- Standard drainage base: $3,000
- 40 LF × $20/LF = $800
- Total drainage: $3,800
Step 5: Add Engineering & Permits
Engineering Costs:
- Under 4 feet: $0 (not required)
- 4-6 feet: $800-$1,500
- 6-8 feet: $1,500-$2,500
- 8+ feet: $2,500-$4,000
Permit Costs by City:
- Dallas: $300-$800
- Fort Worth: $225-$700
- Plano: $300-$950
- Arlington: $200-$600
Step 6: Calculate Total Estimate
Complete Formula:
Total = (Linear Feet × Adjusted Rate) + Drainage + Engineering + Permits

- Drainage (comprehensive): $6,000 + (120 × $35) = $10,200
- Engineering: Complex design = $3,500
- Permit: Dallas = $750
- HOA fees: Highland Park = $200
- Total: $78,130
Estimated Range: $70,000-$90,000
DFW Soil & Drainage Cost Modifiers
Per-foot rates assume average North Texas soil. Real-world retaining wall cost shifts based on what's under the slope. Three soil regions dominate DFW, and each one changes the budget in different ways.
Eagle Ford Shale — Dallas, Highland Park, Preston Hollow
Eagle Ford is a high-PI expansive clay shale that runs under most of Dallas County. It swells in wet springs and shrinks in dry summers, which is why so many older Dallas retaining walls lean or crack within ten to fifteen years. Footings on Eagle Ford need to sit at least twenty-four inches below grade, and drainage has to actively move water away from the back face — passive gravel is not enough. Budget impact: add ten to fifteen percent to the base per-foot rate and plan on enhanced drainage instead of standard.
Austin Chalk — Plano, Frisco, McKinney, far North Dallas
Austin Chalk is a soft limestone that crops up across most of Collin County and the northern edge of Dallas. The upside is that chalk is stable and does not swell. The downside is that it is hard enough that footings often need rock drilling, not auger work. Budget impact: add twenty to forty dollars per linear foot for chalk drilling on walls four feet and taller. Drainage cost typically stays standard because chalk drains well naturally.
Tarrant County Clay — Fort Worth, Arlington, Mansfield
Tarrant County sits on a mix of Eagle Ford Shale, Woodbine sand, and a heavy black clay locally called Houston Black. The clay is the most expansive soil in DFW — six to eight inches of seasonal movement is common in low-lying areas near the Trinity River and creek corridors. Walls here need deeper footings (often thirty inches), tighter rebar spacing, and a full French drain at the heel. Budget impact: add fifteen to twenty-five percent to the base per-foot rate, plan on mandatory enhanced drainage, and expect engineering on anything over three feet. See North Texas Soil Conditions & Drainage Guide for the regional breakdown.
Worked Example: 50 ft × 4 ft Hand-Carved Concrete Wall, Plano
A fifty-foot, four-foot retaining wall on a typical Plano backyard slope. Austin Chalk substrate, moderate access through a side gate, single tier, no built-in features.
Base wall construction
- 50 LF × $280/LF (4-foot height tier) = $14,000
Chalk drilling adder
- 50 LF × $30/LF average for footing drilling = $1,500
Site access multiplier
- Moderate (side gate, 36-inch clearance) at 1.20x
- ($14,000 + $1,500) × 1.20 = $18,600
Drainage (enhanced, since chalk surface water sheets toward the wall)
- Base: $4,000
- 50 LF × $25/LF = $1,250
- Drainage subtotal: $5,250
Engineering (required at 4 feet in Plano)
- Stamped plan: $1,200
Permits
- Plano residential retaining wall permit: $475
HOA review (most Plano master-planned communities require it)
- Architectural review: $150
Project total: $25,675
Estimated range: $24,000-$28,500
That works out to roughly $513 per linear foot all-in, which is the realistic mid-range number for Plano walls four feet and under. Smaller walls under three feet drop to $350-$400 per linear foot because engineering and permits come off the budget. Larger walls above five feet jump to $650-$900 per linear foot because footings deepen, rebar density roughly doubles, and tiered systems often replace a single tall face.

A wall holds its value at resale better than most exterior work, because it solves a problem a buyer can see from the driveway. What it returns on any specific property depends on the lot.
Value Factors
- Turns a slope into flat ground you can use
- Stops soil from washing off the lot
- Gives the yard a finished edge from the street
- Many grading and slope projects need one first
What an Online Calculator Won't Show You
A calculator gives you a number. It does not tell you why two contractors can quote the same fifty-foot wall at $14,000 and $26,000. The gap usually comes from things that never show up on a spreadsheet.
Footing depth and rebar spec. The cheap quote often assumes an eighteen-inch footing with rebar on twelve-inch centers. The honest quote prices a thirty-inch footing with rebar on six-inch centers and a key cut into the subgrade. On expansive Tarrant County clay, the second wall is the only one that lasts past year ten. The first one moves and cracks within three winters.
Hidden site work. Stripping topsoil, hauling spoils off-site, protecting an irrigation system, working around a sprinkler manifold, restoring a sod line, replacing a section of fence to get equipment in. We see jobs where the wall itself is $18,000 and the site work behind it is another $6,000. A calculator will never surface that line.
What happens to the existing slope. A retaining wall changes how water moves across your yard. If the new wall blocks a natural drainage path, you need to redirect that water somewhere — usually a swale, a catch basin, or a new downspout extension. Skip it and you flood your neighbor or undermine the wall you just built. Add $800-$2,500 for proper grade work that the calculator never asked about.
Permit timing. Dallas permits run six to eight weeks during peak season. Plano runs four to six weeks with HOA review on top. Frisco can be quick or slow depending on the planning department's queue. If you need the wall built before pool installation starts, permit timing is part of the cost — a delayed start can mean rescheduling crews, paying mobilization twice, or losing a seasonal window. We build that risk into our quotes; calculators do not.
The calculator above gets you within fifteen percent of a real number on a clean site. On anything messy, treat it as a starting point and budget a contingency line of ten to twenty percent until a contractor has walked the property.
