A spa grotto puts a carved rock cave over your spa. You sit in the water under a rock ceiling, in the shade, with the pool in front of you. We carve each one by hand in concrete and size it to the spa you have.

What You Get With a Spa Grotto
The standard grotto covers three things:
- The carved rock shell. We bend a steel frame to set the shape, and our carvers cut the rock face into the carving mix by hand.
- Color. We brush on stains and washes in several passes until the rock matches the look you picked.
- Sealer. We seal the finish against Texas sun and spa water.
That package runs $10,000-$20,000. The size of your spa and how much rock goes over and around it set where your grotto lands in that range.
Fitting the Grotto to Your Spa
We don't sell one fixed size. Spas come round, square and freeform, so we measure yours and build the grotto around it.

At the site visit we check four things:
- The shape and size of the spa
- The deck and coping around it
- Where the afternoon sun hits, so the overhang shades the seats you use
- How we get equipment into the backyard
You get a written estimate within 48 hours.
Add-Ons: Waterfall, Lights and a Seat
We price each add-on per job, because the cost depends on your spa and your yard.
- Waterfall or spillway. Water falls off the rock lip into the spa. This is the only option that needs plumbing.
- Lighting. LED fixtures in the grotto ceiling light the spa at night. We run the conduit through the frame before the carving mix goes on, so choose lighting before the build starts.
- Carved seat. A ledge carved into the back wall, for sitting out of the water under the overhang.
How We Build a Spa Grotto
We use no forms. We build the grotto on a steel frame, and our carvers shape the rock by hand.
- Frame. We bend rebar into the shape of the rock and tie it to a footing sized for North Texas clay. Plumbing and light conduit for any add-ons go inside the frame now.
- Carving mix. Our crew stacks a high-strength carving mix onto the steel by hand, one layer at a time. The mix is rated up to 4,000 PSI.
- Carving. Carvers cut ledges, seams and grain into the last layer while it is workable. No two of our grottos share a rock face.
- Color and seal. Stain goes on in passes, and the sealer goes on last.
Most spa grottos take 7-10 days on site. Design, permits and HOA approval come first and take longer than the build itself.
Permits for a Spa Grotto
Plan on a permit. Fort Worth requires a building permit for accessory structures, fountains with plumbing included. Frisco wants engineer drawings for any pool or spa structure over 36 inches tall, and a spa grotto clears that height. If you add lights or a waterfall, you also need electrical and plumbing permits.
Rules differ from city to city, and easements and setbacks limit where a structure can sit. We check your city's requirements and pull the permits before we start. If your HOA wants drawings, we provide them.
Care and Warranty
Carved concrete costs 40-60% less than natural stone and needs little upkeep:
- Reseal the carved surface every 3-5 years.
- Keep the spa chemistry balanced. That protects the stain.
- With a waterfall, clear leaves off the lip so the water falls evenly.
Every grotto we build carries a 5-year workmanship warranty. With regular resealing, a carved concrete grotto lasts 50 years or more.
Want a Bigger Grotto?
The spa grotto is our standard package. For a swim-in cave on the pool, a grotto with a slide or a combo with several waterfalls, see our pool grotto builders page, where we price each one as a custom build.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you build a grotto over a spa I already have?
Yes. We build spa grottos over new spas and over spas that have been in the ground for years. At the site visit we look at the spa, the deck around it and how we get equipment into the yard. If any deck has to come out and get patched, the estimate lists that work as its own line.
What comes with a spa grotto?
The standard grotto is the carved rock shell over your spa, stained by hand and sealed. That runs $10,000-$20,000 depending on the size of the spa and how much rock goes over it. A waterfall, lighting and a carved seat are add-ons.
Does a spa grotto need plumbing or electrical?
The grotto itself needs neither. Plumbing comes in only if you add a waterfall or spillway over the spa. Lights need wiring, and the conduit has to run through the frame before the carving mix goes on, so decide on lighting before the build starts.
Do I need a permit for a spa grotto?
Usually, yes. Fort Worth requires a building permit for accessory structures, and Frisco wants engineer drawings for structures over 36 inches tall. Lights and a waterfall add electrical or plumbing permits. Rules differ by city, so we check yours and pull the permits before the crew shows up.
How long does a spa grotto take to build?
7-10 days on site. Design, permits and HOA review come first and take longer than the build. Once those clear, our crew frames, stacks, carves and colors back to back.
How do I take care of a spa grotto?
Reseal the carved surface every 3-5 years and keep your spa chemistry balanced, which protects the stain. If you add a waterfall, clear leaves off the lip so the water falls evenly. Every grotto we build carries a 5-year workmanship warranty.
